In 1918, the flu pandemic mainly killed previously healthy adults (leaving a lot of orphans). But then, as now, there were exceptions. Adorable Irene in 1915 Kentucky became a victim in 1918.
Please stop with these sad posts. My grandfather lost a very beloved sister, who was pregnant with her 2nd child, to this 1918 flu. Left behind her husband and a small son. Please stop with these posts! Aren't we going through enough today without adding more sorrow from the past?
We can also see these as hope. Yes, many people lost loved ones, children were orphaned. But it ended! The suvivors went on to live their lives, have families and keep memories of those who didn't survive alive.
Kathleen Sears I feel the same. People keep comparing the coronavirus to the Spanish flu. When it was a different flu. And a different time. A time when medicine wasn’t as advanced as today. If the coronavirus happened then yes I’m sure it would have been just as bad. But if the Spanish flu happened now I don’t think it would have lasted 2 full years like in the past. Yes take what happened in the past as a lesson. But don’t dwell on it to the point of adding additional worries and concerns to what we already have going on. At this point a lot of us don’t even know whether to be concerned with the flu, others chances of survival, or if this is a mass conspiracy to break down America. I’m sure they only had to worry about getting people well at that point and not all the other mambo jumbo.
Jessie Whitten , are you out of your mind? A conspiracy to break down America??? Yeah, so lets begin by killing all the Italians, Spanish and Portuguese! God!!!
Kathleen Sears History has a lot of sadness but it’s important we don’t forget everyone has a story. But can’t erase cause it makes us sad or mad. Just scroll on buy if upsets you. Not being mean.
Jessie Whitten wrong! We need to read some of these posts because as you read you begin to understand that a virus can have and will have a second wave. Don’t you realize most of us live in cities and apartments and not rural areas? Travel is much more advanced. My own grandmother had the Spanish flu. It took her well over a year to recover. History repeats itself because we want to turn a blind eye to our past.
Lee Ann Forester Train I never said take a blind eye on it. But from the very beginning they started comparing and just adding to the fear.
I am sorry about your grandma I’m sure that was awful; but this doesn’t take a year to get over. Most people recover w/ no lasting issues. Yes it’s scary because people have died from it. But at this moment in time we don’t know how many people officially had it because they don’t test everyone unless you are emitted. We don’t know the official death count because they are counting everyone who is dying. Back then they were actually concerned with the people getting sick. Today they rather just feed into the hysteria. There is most likely not going to be a cure. Everyone will probably either get this or know someone who will. And I’m sure this will not be the last virus. What’s going to happen next fall or next winter?? Are they going to just keep closing down everything any time a new virus comes along???
Jessie Whitten my grandma was pregnant with my dad and he was early and very small. We don’t know the lasting effects of this virus yet. It is scary financially and as it stands now recovery will be slow and maybe some will never recover. I do believe God will have the final say and it will be good. We are extremely complacent in this country . We have little regard for what we do have and complain endlessly when our norm is disrupted even if it means lives.
Lee Ann Forester Train I doubt there will be any lasting issues from the virus itself. But there will be more mental lasting issues by people who more than likely didn’t even get it. We’ve had 5 murder/suicides in the last 3 weeks. Totaling 8 people!!! And only 3 supposed deaths by the coronavirus. (I say supposed because 2 weren’t even conformed with the coroner at the hospital)
Jessie Whitten 35, 000 Americans have died of this virus in a little over one month! Murder and suicide are NOT contagious! This is NOT a media hoax as your lunatic president said! He's gotten people killed by keeping this threat quiet when he knew about it since at least December! Obama gave Trump a detailed plan for keeping this threat away. And Obama had set up almost 50 agencies around the world to track and stop these types of viruses. Trump shut them all down in 2018, even though he had been briefed that something like Covid-19 was coming! Trump will be held accountable for this! This is a crime against humanity! You're spreading lies!
Jessie Whitten But you're right about ONE thing... We don't know how many people have this virus or have died from it because we're only testing less than 1% of Americans. Trump doesn't want us to know how many cases there are because it will reflect badly on HIM and affect his chances of reelection! #worstpresidentever

My 2 year old mom and 3 older sisters became orphans when their father, mother and 4 infant and child sisters (including newborn twins that my grandmother was pregnant with while caring for her sick and dying husband and daughters) all died within 7 months of each other during the second wave of the Spanish Flu Pandemic. 😢😢😢😢😢😢

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
