well, there's an Arabic coffee service next to him, and possibly a hookah, and he's wearing a keffiyeh, an Arabic headdress. But the collar and shirt/jacket he's wearing are European, as are his shoes. And the background, of course, seems to be a backdrop. So I'm guessing this is a very old example of those "dress up in a costume and have your photo taken" things.
AncientFaces I'm not sure. if you can zoom in somehow, it would be cool to know what the thing is above the two walking sticks. I'm thinking maybe it's someone who went on a tour of Egypt and brought things back...
Anne Talbott There is a spoon on the table above the walking sticks, then a photo of a building but I can't tell what building it is. My old eyes can't make out every detail! :)
The Egyptian craze? There is a lit candle on the table also. I think the man is a blonde or red head, from the looks of his eyebrows & eyelashes. This looks to me to be either an American photo or a European photo.
Was he a fan of the silent movie actor,Rudolf Valentino, or the English man who tried to unite the Arab tribes, Lawrence of Arabia. Love the stage setting. The items on and about the table are interesting. The ornate rod could be a way of finding its origin and date.
Considering the painted backdrop and the props laid out so carefully and in profusion, I don't think he was anything more than someone who dressed up in something exotic for a photo. That seemed to be popular in the 1920s or thereabout.
Below is a photo my dad had taken about 1922, when he was 20 years old. It was taken in Newark, New Jersey. Believe me, my dad was not a cowboys, and there were few cowboys, if any, roaming around Newark!
Looks like a "take your photo as ...". I have one of me as an old west sherriff, taken in Virgina City Nevada years ago. However, the two walking sticks and the end of the tablecloth do make for a mysterious Masonic square and compass. Hummmmmm.
