Little Fred Kroetch (pronounced 'crutch') in 1928 Washington state. We really don't know the story behind this photo...were his parents just having fun dressing him up? Or was it Halloween?

He was 3 years old in the picture, and this particular photo has always been a family treasure of ours. Since my grandparents and his siblings (4) are long deceased, we can't ask them why Uncle Fred is smoking a cigar and wearing a hat and suit! 🙁 He did die of lung cancer, but I never saw him smoke a cigar!

Fred had a long, good life even though - as happened often at the time - his mother died when he was 7.
We've started building his biography but still have so much to share about him.
How have I not noticed this photo before?! LOVE it!

He looks rather large for only being 2, maybe they thought smoking would stunt his growth??

AncientFaces I read it before I commented, he's still a good sized boy for that age!
im guessing its not a real cigar, back in the day they had them made out of candy and chewing gum... I remember getting them at the barber shop

KellieAnne Smith Foreman Truthfully, I think it was a real one and his parents were just having fun dressing him up. He was the first boy (he had an older sister at that time).

It hasn't had a chance to stunt his growth yet. He's only been smoking for a couple of years so far.

Jerry McFarland AKA "Tiny Bear" was a Ruthless Irish Gangster in the early 1900s he was known to take out people's kneecaps with a machete and once slip through a police line that had surrounded the gang's hideout disguised as a little boy he came to a tragic end when they found him floating face down in a puddle with a Tootsie Pop stuffed down his throat

Rosanna Martinez well thank you , I've actually have written a few , also a few short screen play's , bit of a hobby , I don't really put them out on the internet anymore seeing's how I had one stolen and it was changed just enough and having no copyright on it I had no recourse when they turned it into a stage play and it became a big hit on Broadway but needless to say I have a number of friends that always tell me Dan you should write a book but I certainly do appreciate your thoughts hope you have a wonderful week and keep your eyes peeled you never know where I might pop up with some silliness

The first time I visited Italy to meet my grandparents I remember being shocked by an adorable younger 6 year old distant cousin who I've grown to love smoking a cigarette, taught by my very sweet great uncle. He's lucky he has good genes since my great uncle smoked every day of his life and lived to be 90, healthy until the last few months of his life.
My father born 1926 in St-Tite, Quebec started smoking as a young child also . He said he would take his mothers hand rolled cigarette but she put in wood stove holes where you put that thing in to open the cast iron plates , well he would take it and smoke the rest of it in front of her and she never said no, he lived to 77 died of liver disease as he took up drinking vodka after my mom died as he cared for her when she developed Mets cancer and had a colostomy bag ! He just mourned her til his death although he moved back to Quebec bought a home across from his favorite sister but kept his home in Maine and he had many girlfriends I was happy for him because my mother made his life miserable during my growing up years as I was the 6th of 8 children ! Her mistreatment calling him every name in the book around us kids cause he had beer on his breath when he came home from work which up in face degrading him sending him to bed at 3:30 every day and then telling one of us “ go wake your father up supper is done” many times he missed supper probably to embarrassed around his children ! And he was the hardest worker of anyone I know of and she treated me and my other sister the same way like I was a w**** screwing 3 men and on the back of a 1% M/C club causing hell and havoc thru out the state of Maine !
I took my dad in during his last few yrs of life as he chose to come live with me and my husband and children and to see a deteriorated man who was so strong all his life cry cause not one of his other children would call or stop visit except my sister who was mistreated but not as bad as I was ! It killed me to see his pain as he was not the bad parent cause he never called my mother a nasty name or laid a hand on her but they all were on moms side and when he died the only thing they cared about was squeezing ever penny out of his estate and I got $3000 less along with another brother who they talked c*** behind his back ! I am glad I , my sister and my children were there to give him the life be and respect he had not gotten from my mother ! I still grieve the way my siblings and grandchildren treated him ! He died 2000 and at least he is at rest

He looks like. Pimp 🤣..
The cigar doesn’t look like has been lite ! I think they dressed him up for fun ! Someone said a 2 year old ? He was a big 2 year old but very sweet picture
You're so right, Cathy! That is my uncle, who didn't smoke at two years of age! I guess my grandparents were just having fun! 🙂🤣 He was quite a little chunky monkey, wasn't he? Although when he was an adult, he was never, ever overweight. Unfortunately, he did take up smoking later in life and died in his 70s of lung cancer. 😢
Fred was my grandfather and I don't remember him smoking at all because he had quit before my memories of him began. Best Papa in the world.
Yeah , Amanda, he was a heavy smoker for most of his life, as was his brother, my Dad. Dad stopped when he was 52 or so - I don’t remember when uncle Fred stopped. Their father and grandfather were also heavy smokers. People who knew their grandfather said that they could still see smoke “rising from his grave” decades later - he smoked 3 packs a day! 🤣🤣🤣

Uncle Fred was an interesting person : born in Washington, he was "adopted" by his Aunt Wea in Whatcom county - his mother's eldest sister -after his mother died. When he was a teenager, and his father remarried, he showed up at his father's house in West Seattle. His stepmother didn't know that her husband had any children (he had 4 - and a few years ago - due to DNA - we found out that there was a 5th half-sibling, conceived between marriages). When Uncle Fred called up his younger brother (my father) and said "I have a good thing going here. Join me", my father showed up. That was too much for the step-mother, their father took them to sign up for the Navy (per their stepmother). It was WW2, their dad signed them up (they were young teens) and they joined and served as teens for most of WW2 After WW2, Dad got a college degree (he hadn't finished high school) and Uncle Fred got a Masters in Math. He spent most of his career (I believe) working in the aeronautics industry. His sister (my aunt) used to joke that she was the only one without a degree or more. That was quite an accomplishment in the 40's and 50's. Uncle Fred loved to joke around. For instance, he said "how am I" when he greeted you. Truthfully, I didn't like that - I was too serious.

My life-time love of geneology and old photos led to the concept of Ancientfaces back in 1999....through the site I have made contact with previously unknown cousins in Australia, Tasmania, England, Scotland and various states in the US, broadening and enriching my family stories, photos and family relationships. The names I am researching resided in and/or settled the following areas: South Wales; Scotland; Northern Ireland; Normandy; Germany, Belgium & the Netherlands; Virginia; West Virginia, Kentucky, Kansas, Idaho and Washington state; first wave of settlers in the Hudson River & Mohawk River Vallies; founding fathers of New Haven, Middlesex and New London Counties, CT, along with Suffolk, Norfolk & Middlesex Counties in MA; first wave of settlers to Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Also, I am a member of the Mayflower Society after tracing my maternal side to John Billington, a Mayflower passenger ( with his family) who settled in Plymouth , and signed, the Mayflower compact.
