A photo of Gladys (Simmons) Van Kleeck and her cat Patsy. I'm amazed that the cat is calmly sitting for the portrait. All the cats I've known would have panicked at the strange setting and found some large piece of furniture to hide under.
I'm not sure I've seen many studio portraits from 1910 taken with an adorable little kitty!? Meet Gladys (Simmons) Van Kleeck (1897 - 1960) with her cat Patsy.
Gladys Simmons was an only child born to John and Cora (Wolven) Simmons in New York. She was born, raised, and lived her entire life in Ulster County near the Hudson River. She must have been a family person because she grew up in her maternal grandparents' home, and after she married, lived with her mother-in-law, her husband, and son.
Thanks to community member Roxie, we have photos of Gladys at various ages and glimpses into her life to remember her by.
We don't know that she is dressed all in black. The coat could be dark green or navy or dark brown. There's no way to tell with a black-and-white photo.
In old photos, my grandmother's wedding blouse (she got married circa 1893) looks black with gray lace around the collar, but I actually have that blouse, and it's dark brown with tan lace.
I've watched wet plate photos develop a few times. Blues and shades of green will come across on the finished plate as almost black. The chemicals used respond differently to various wavelengths.
yes she is wearing BLACK! You might want to research fabrics at the time, they did not have ARTIFICIAL colors and used plants. Mauve was the first color made from a chemical. Black is from Natural wool and is resistant to mud and dirt - THINK ABOUT IT, there were NO WASHING MACHINES OR PAVED ROADS. THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU SAY something so foolish. Most colored clothing was BLACK, INDIGO, WHITE, DARK GREEN. VERY LIMITED unless one had SILKS from Asia which were IMPRACTICAL in most of the USA
Gladys M. Simmons was an only child born in Ulster County, New York to John N. Simmons (1861 - 1936) and Cora G. Wolven (1871 - 1960). Both parents were also New York natives.
When Gladys was three years old, she was living with her parents in Saugerties, New York, in her maternal grandparents' house, while her father worked as a painter.
On November 20th 1921 in Kingston New York Gladys Simmons married Everett Van Kleeck (1898 - 1958) and they had two sons: Everett John (1922 - 1923) and Warren S. Van Kleeck (1925 - 2009).
When Gladys was 53, she lived with her mother-in-law, her husband, and her younger son Warren. She was a housewife, her husband Everett was a farmer, and Warren worked as an auto mechanic.

I love antique photographs. In addition to sharing old photos of my family, I am also going through my collection of "antique store people". They've been sitting in a storage tub in my back room much too long and maybe some of their families will be able to find them here.
If I'm able to identify the people in the photo, I upload it not only to AncientFaces, but also to Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Find-A-Grave. If the person in the picture is a military veteran, the photo also goes on Fold3. I figure that the more places I upload these pictures, the greater the chance that a relative will be able to find them.
