George Washington Walser
George Washington Walser Born 08 February 1818 in Wilkes County, GA; died 23 June 1902 in Montague County, TX. He was the son of David Walser and Elizabeth Darden. He married Mary Ann Darden 29 September 1841 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, and soon after relocated to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Mississippi Infantry (State Troops), Company E. This company was present at the Battle of Vicksburg in July 1863. The Walser pamphlet states that he was taken prisoner, but I have not located any records that confirm that, nor any that show his release. He married Mary Ann Darden, born 09 July 1822 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama; died 1865 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Lemuel Darden and Rebecca Weaver, so is George's first cousin. After Mary Ann’s death, George married Martha Caroline Johnson Canty, a widow. She died shortly after the census was taken in 1870. They had one son, George. A few years later, George married Sarah Balack or Blalock in Amite County, Mississippi. They had several children. The family moved slowly across Arkansas and into Texas, finally residing in Montague county. For a picture and other information, click here. Children of George Walser and Mary Ann Darden are: i. David Walser, born Abt. 1842. ii. John Thomas Walser, born Abt. 1843; died 1864 in Selma, Alabama. iii. Samuel Lafayette Walser, born Abt. 1847. iv. James Jeffries Walser, born Abt. 1850. v. Rufus B Walser, born 27 January 1853 in Oktibbeha County, MS; died 21 August 1914 in Montague County, TX; married (1) Elsavan A Johnson 23 April 1876 in Arkansas; married (2) Elizabeth Hollis 12 November 1885 in Montague County, TX. vi. Francis Lee Walser, born Abt. 1857.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
