Michigan store, 1938. Look at those prices! Bread 10 cents, liver sausage 29 cents, baked meat loaf 26 cents . . .
It would be so nice if dates were included in photos. This photo is really interesting. I wonder when it was taken? Looks like 1800s but Florence was born in 1883, so it has to be around 1920s???

I could be wrong......but wasn’t 1938 right in the middle of the Great Depression?

Not in the middle - it was 1929 to 1939 - but certainly at the end.

AncientFaces: oh, sorry! I always thought ww2 was the end. My folks always said....right up till December 7th, they all thought the Depression would never end! No matter, 10 cents was worth a $1.75 in today’s money.

Monty Arnold The official end was '39 but I'm sure people still felt the effects - we're still feeling the effects of '08. That's interesting - 10 cents is $1.75 today? I hadn't checked that - so my bread today should be under $2 and it's almost $5. Sigh.

Early 30’s I’m guessing because my Grandpa was 16 and lied about his age to be able to get a job to work on the construction of the Hoover Dam....The dam construction started in 1931.. He was a gaffer...he hung off the side of a mountain by a rope with a jack hammer and dynamite....all to earn $6.00 a week..

My Grandfather said that they sold cracked eggs. Everybody wanted them because they were half the price of the good eggs. You have to remember that this was during the Great Depression and there were lot's of people just barely surviving.

My grandmother once told me about how she spent $5 a week to feed her family of 4.

And after college, I spent $5/wk to feed 2 of us in the 70's. Inflation in prices has skyrocketed in the past 40 yrs.

The little boy is so cute wearing that tie. When I see pictures like this, I want to go back in time and live there.

Better the live tarantulas than the effects of "the harmless green highly viscous liquid" they (importers) used to dip them in to effectively kill everything on them--one more thing that one wonders if it helped cause lots of the health woes long years later bit by bit... make your own garden's folks:)...descendant of produce sales people here.

I’m noticing the size of this store. It’s much smaller than our superstores of today. Perhaps we don’t really need all the extras that are in our stores today. I don’t really see any fresh produce or dairy products. Is that because most people grew and raised their own then?
