How interesting that we want to know more! A finishing school got a lady prepared for marriage and running a home and some cultural knowledge. But it didn't allow for personal pathways like our educational system does today. I imagine some of these ladies "finished" well and did what was expected in those days, but I hope more than a few followed her own wishes, passions, and leanings. Kori Halligan, Barbara Camarda Holzapfel. Don't you?
A finishing school is a school for young women, that focuses on teaching social graces and upper class cultural rites as a preparation for entry into society. There are even a few left today.
Oh my, you make me feel old! ;) You learned manners and the accomplishments of a lady in finishing schools - art, needlework, music . . . . everything that "finished" you as a lady. An outmoded concept - does anyone remember when a lady didn't wear diamonds during the day? (Except for your wedding ring, of course)
Thank you for the information. I was taught etiquette, manners, and public speaking in my teen years. Helped me tremendously throughout my life. I would have loved to attend a finishing school.
Sara - Until around the 1970's, a "nice" lady didn't wear any bling during the day. Too flashy - too uncouth. I think our current love of bling comes from all of that denial!
Why did they call it "finishing" school?? Because when they finished this school they were "ready" to enter the upper class society? I never really knew why and thought I'd ask.
