Mike, I read that years ago. I think I may have given it to the kid. it's such a great story. My mom remembers seeing much of that in Pendleton when they'd drive up there.
Most people HATE Native Americans, more commonly referred to as "Indians". During the settlement of the United States of America, a majority of Americans called for the utter wiping out of the "Red menace". The were called 'savages', and generally despised. That was not good for them, not at all. They were killed with reckless abandon, either singly, or whole encampments. The reasons they were hated so much? Gee, could it be that they didn't bear a resemblance to George Washington? Could be. Settlers wanted their lands, whether or not they were "For sale", or just up for grabs? Probably. Before the hostile invasion of the Europeans, most of the hundreds of individual tribes were for the most part peaceful, getting along pretty well with their neighbors, with few disputes. Murder was rare, as were other crimes of disrespect. They lived in a manner that did not destroy their habitat, and felt that nature was supreme, not that man was supreme to nature. They did not seek to own the land. They were not guilty of many of the despicable acts that the 'civilized' aggressors inflicted upon them. Scalping a victim was taught to them by the Europeans, not the other way around. So, in light of this, who were really the 'Savages"? And things have not improved much.
Always feel guilty knowing we "immigrants" took their land and slaughtered them. I, for one, am sorry! We could have worked something out that benefited both!
