Dr. Thomas Jefferson Pitchford & six sons: Thomas served in the NC State Senate. These sons were in the Confederate Army. Samuel enlisted but was sent home because of his age. 1 son was killed in the Battle of 7 Pines, another was shot in one of the last battles, dying on the way home.

The exposure for the photograph may have taken longer back then as well, and if the guy looked sideways then the capture might have just made it look like he is.
The father was nice looking, the son to his right (if you are looking straight at the pic only) looks like he would have needed glasses badly.The son in the middle up above seem to have somewhat of the same issue but, not as drastic. Not sure this could be corrected completely at the time, probably kept him out of serving.
yes these conditions are easily done with a simple operation now, back in those days they only had ether to put people under, operations were complicated unlike now

I gotta say something to the historically ignorant who made comments about these people being "racists" and "fighting on the wrong side"...none of these guys fought and died so rich people could own slaves...likewise the Northerners didn't fight to free slaves, slavery wasn't an issue till two years after the war started.
