Back of a store circa 1910 Pennsylvania? What do you think? Bananas, onions, apples(?), cigar boxes, an old phone . . . and two guys hanging out. Such an interesting snapshot of the past.
I went to the site and clicked on some stuff and found a photo of the guy with the mustache, Diego D'Amico, standing in front of a store...The D'Amico Fruit Co., so, yep, this was a produce store.
Going by the wedding photo and the storefront photo, Diego was already going a bit gray, from what can be seen of his mustache and hair, in the back of store photo. His hair in other photos was very dark, same with the mustache.
Since he died at the age of 53 in 1927, I'd say the back of store photo was probably somewhere between about 1915 and his death.
I went to high school in the '60s with two sons from a family named D'Amico, but that's a common Italian surname.
There is a wall clock w/ a pendulum on the left hand side. Under it is an ad for _ank Roll Tobacco. Paper bags are hanging on the wall. Different types of fruit is on the counter. Overripe bananas are hanging up. I see scales, crates, bins, shelves holding different products, a hanging light, a telephone on the back wall, cigar boxes w/ cigars, & a chair under a table/bench near the scales. There is what looks like a chock board on the right side w/ the word C _ _ s F. Perhaps it is Cans F? It looks like there may be a radiator near the left front. But, maybe not. There are two men standing up. It looks like they may be wearing glasses, coats & boots. The inside walls look to be made of block.
Hi all. This was my great-great grandfather and I posted the picture. This dates from around 1923 as his son is with him who was born in 1904. Glad you enjoyed the picture! This photo is in the back room of his Produce Company!
Charles Damico, born Diego Francesco Damico in 1873 Sicily, immigrated to the United States in 1884 where he created wealth for himself and his community.
His parents were Filippo D'amico (1835 - 1881) and Giuseppa Carmela Lombardo (1846 - after 1886). He had siblings Agostino, Girolama, and Rosaria. Charles arrived in the US in 1994.
In 1902, Charles married Anna A. Arena (1880 - 1954) and they had Phillip, Frances, Frederick, Anna, Johana, Jeroma, Rose, Anthony, Rita, and Cecelia.
In the 1910 federal census, he was married and head of household. He said that he was a "Wholesale and Retail Merchant" in the fruit industry (owner). He owned his home and in the household in Meyersdale, PA were wife Annie (they had been married 8 years), mother. now called Josephine. and children Philip (sic), Josephine, Fredrick (sic), and Geohanna (sic). He could read, write, and spoke English. He was a naturalized US citizen, and both of his parents were born in Italy.
By 1915, he had become a great success - an article about him and his dedication to his town was written. See Charles Damico's Manner of Showing His Interest in and Loyalty to Meyersdale for more details.
On his WW1 draft card was the following: He was stout, had black hair, brown hair, and no distinguishing marks.

While we don't know what the first business transaction was, it is easy to imagine that thousands of years ago a good hunter bartered his excess meat for something more useful to him. In the history ...
