Both my grandfathers were in their 40s by the time WWI was in progress, and my paternal grandfather was mostly deaf, so he would have been rejected anyway.
My dad was only 13 when that war began and 17 when it ended. But, even if he wanted to join at 16 or 17, he was the eldest in a large family and their sole support. And he was not yet a citizen. He couldn't apply for US citizenship until he was 21.
My Grandfather and his two brothers , all served in WW1. Him and one of his brother served in the same unit . Ammo transportation train. The train referred to the mule trains they used to resupply the front lines.
Great grandfather was apart of WWI AND WWII! I forget precisely what he did but afterward he was a carpenter, built his own home on Gerling st in Schenectady, and also worked at GE. He came to America from Italy in 1903. My great Grandpa was a badass 💙
