Daniel Tobin family, Hackbridge London
A photo of Daniel Tobin and family of Hackbridge London.

I found this picture in an antique shop in Penetangushene Ontario in July of 2009. On the back is written "Mr. Tobin and family Hackbridge" The only Hackbridge found on a google search is a subway stop on the London underground. The 1901 census shows the following family that are a good match for the older children in the photo. It helps that in the photo they have arranged the older child in order of age. Daniel and Jessie married in 1885 and by 1901 had 7 children. The photo has 15, so 8 more have been born. At an average of one every two years this picture was probably taken around 1917. Daniel was born in 1867 and so was 50. My guess is that the picture may be around 1920 as the boys who were enlistment age do not have their uniforms on and some of them were likely in the war. It being over at the time of the picture meant they were dressed in civilian clothes.
The back row can probably be named accurately in this way;
right to left: Matthew, Jessie, Daniel, Caroline, William, then Annie. Helen is sitting in front of Matthew. The other children will have to be named when the 1911 and 1921 census' show the family. One of them must have had family that moved to Canada for the picture to end up here. Daniel Tobin is the father. Jessie (Bennett) is the mother. I hope a Tobin who recognizes the census lists below will find this picture. Below are some census records and a birth and marriage reference for the Daniel and Jessie. Great detective work with this 'orphan' photo!
Hackbridge railway station isn't part of the Underground or 'subway system'. It's a part of the overground railway network. Thanks for posting Tobin photo. My dad William Daniel Tobin was born in Bermondsey 1927. His dad was Daniel Tobin born 1891.

As you say Jill, big families were common in those days, all the family pulled together, children had left school by 14 and helped bring money into the home, even the younger ones would have helped out

this couldn't be 1920, is about beginings of the century. the clothes and the woman hair style say it.

I agree it wasn't taken in 1920. My parents were were born in 1902 and 1909, and I've seen photos of the clothing styles in family photos.

7 kids were born by 1901, 8 more came after that, and the two little girls look to be around 2 years old. There's no reason why this woman couldn't have had a child every year; it only takes 9 months to produce a child, and a woman can get pregnant not long after the birth. So, add 8 more kids to the 1901 for the first 7, and that takes you to 1909. Add 2 years for the little girls' age, and you've got 1911. Plus, the girl and boy sitting in the small chairs next to their parents could have been fraternal twins. They look to be close to the same age. So even if the mother had a half a year between some births, that would still only get you to around 1912 or 1914. And that fits the clothing and hair styles much more accurately. By 1920, clothing styles had changed quite a bit.

I don't understand how this picture absolutely could not be from the beginning of the twenties. Seven children look old enough to have been born by 1901, and the other eight look young enough to have been born after 1901 by 1920. Then there's the record of twin Tobin girls being born in 1920, which would place this photo later, actually. Taking into account possible miscarriages, it all adds up to me.

My thoughts: the family does not look British, urban, or from the 1920s. They look American/Canadian, rural, and 1908, give or take two years. It is largely a myth that poor folks' fashion lagged behind rich folks', especially when they were dressed in their best clothes for a portrait (which they could not have afforded if they were dirt poor anyway). The photo was found in a shop in Ontario, Canada, and without stronger evidence, I'd say this family lived in that vicinity.

The head of the family Daniel in this photo was born in 1867 and his son Daniel was ten years old in 1901, so was born in 1891.
My Grandad Daniel Tobin was born in 1891 in Southwark. So if this photo was taken in 1920, this is a photo of my Grandad when he was only 29 years old. My dad William Daniel Tobin died in 2008, I wish he could have seen this photo.
