The 'smithy' or 'farrier' was as important to a town as the general store, and the post office. Their hot coal burning smelters could be seen for miles outside of town, and the smell was as unmistakeable as the sound of hammering steel on steel. In a way, I wish horses were still a favorable mode of transport. I had the best conversation with my Grandfather on slow easy rides into town on hot summer days from our Farm on Route O into Orrick Missouri. I miss him, I miss the horses, I miss the sounds.

Croton? I lived in Ohio for a long time and that name doesn't sound familiar at all. A lot of little farming communities though so maybe some place like that .

Croton is where the egg farm was, it was so massive & the flies were horrible! Fortunately it was eventually closed due to the unsanitary conditions. It is North of Johnstown & East of Sunbury.

Thank you for adding my photo of my grand father to your wonderful page. Cliffe was a very hard worker, starting work age 13 and horse shoeing in WWII where he met Guy Lauderbaugh and they were partners until Cliffe moved to Wyoming to work in the tie camps.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful photo with the rest of the world! Photos like these are treasures to be shared.
