3 year old Clara Malvina Paradis of Penobscot County Maine. She died of measles in 1899 a few years after this photo was taken. Even at such a young age, I feel as though her personality really shows in this image.

As beautiful she was perhaps she may have had some health issues that combined with measles. though she looked a bit peaked or older which it seems.

I spend a lot of time in Penobscot Bay and will look up the name. The Camden library has great records. She looks much older than 3 in expression, but her body looks small. This is why we vaccinate today! Nobody needs to get measles anymore.

What an era, and century. All those diseases. We've come a long way to prevent these diseases. And yet, some parents thinking is my child isn't getting autism from the vaccines. Stupid thinking. Autism is in your genes, not from the vaccines.

It looks like the picture has been tinted or enhanced and that's probably why. People used to do that to their photos to make them more lifelike.

Carroll, the eyes were drawn in later in a lot of cases.
The Victorians had a different relationship with death than we do - memento mori means 'remember you will die'. They were a lot more comfortable with death.

My grandma told about a aunt dying. They laid her out in the parlor. Her eyes were pinned open.
A photo was taken. Grandma said she was 5 and it was creepy.

I always thought that people at that time looked older than we do now and I would like to understand why this is? Can it be the photos themselves and or I do realise that times were harder to a certain point and people had to mature faster... how interesting those times were, I really love it!

She is very beautiful,looks much older than her years.I remember having the measles at that age and the chicken pox soon after.My two younger brothers and I were all sick at the same time.....our poor Mom !

These are interesting pictures not only from a family related point of view, but from the historical point of view also. It's interesting to see how people dressed in a particular period they lived and to know also what kind of diseases killed them (unfortunately and sadly at a very young age)

It is stories like this that we need to remind ourselves , just how far we have come in the fight against childhood diseases. When someone tells me they do not believe in vaccinating their children, I am reminded of how many children died of measles, mumps, chicken pox, polio and other diseases.
