I think thats probably true. Thanks to Matthew Brady. His photos of the aftermath of Antietam an Gettysburgh bought home the true horror of that great American tragedy. However there is a reasonable body of photographic work from the British in the Crimea. It does not depict the horror such as Brady succeeded in doing.

Most of all advances in "so called civilization "have come through War. Medicine, surgery, writing, discovery of microbe, although Brady was given more credit than due him. Most of civil war images were shot by others, than Brady.

This is sadly true. Many modern medical and scientific advances were the result of military engagement. Indeed, Brady was the premier"on site" photographer of that age but there were many such "cutting edge" photographers then of battlefields, groups of soldiers, landscape, etc. I have several books about this filled with such photos.

Watch "The General" by Buster Keaton, although a comedy, it has more realistic scenes of Civil War ever photographed.
