Country music singer and musician Charlie Daniels died today at the age of 83. Best remembered for his 1979 “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” - do you have a favorite song of his?

A number of years ago our family stopped at a small country fair in Perris, CA. We saw a sign that Charlie Daniels would be there at 8:00pm. Tickets $5.00. Thinking that it was probably a Charlie Daniels impersonator $5.00 was reasonable. Much to our surprise and shock it was the real Charlie Daniels. He gave a fabulous, very relaxed concert in front of maybe 150 people for 1 1/2 hours. He was getting ready to release the album Simple Man and said he wanted to do it for us. He got a standing ovation and brought the house down. Wow...we will never forget that.

Charles Edward Daniels was an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to Southern rock, country, and bluegrass music. He was best known for his number-one country hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". Daniels was active as a singer and musician since the 1950s. He was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2002, the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
