My grandfather was born in 1912 and died at the age of 31 from pneumonia. I asked my mom about it and she said a lot of relatively younger people died back then. She said penicillin wasn't even widely used.

This reminds me of the story my Mom told me....of when she was a young girl,she would watch for the Milkman coming down her street. The wagon was pulled by a horse,and this horse took a liking to Mom. He would look for her ,and when she was out,would climb the front steps ,to be near her,much to the dislike of the Milkman! It was a great memory for Mom,in her later years
38 years old was still fairly young even for back then when a man born in 1913 had a life expectancy of 50. Could have been an accident or any number of diseases. My maternal grandfather died in 1920 of pneumonia, and he was 54.
Bill Leonard and my father, Carey Yates, were working on a farm that they jointly owned, when Bill collapsed from a heart attack. He died while my father was rushing him to town. Bill's father, Henry C. Leonard, died at age 47(pic below). Bill was my mother's 1st cousin.
