This is such an interesting photo - look at the shadow person above Albert Tomas Drew taken in London during the late 1800s. Double exposure 'spirit' photos were a popular novelty & touted as evidence of ghosts.
There were people who made a living from faking these. There is a famous one of Mary Todd Lincoln with Abraham's face superimposed. Apparently she fervently believed in the spirit world, and was taken in by one of these charlatans.
spiritualistic doctrines were popular at that time. Many people believed the souls of dead people could be contacted, photographed.... Dr. Crookes, a respected scientist, engaged in paranormal research (altough his results have all the characteristics of a fraud, and he was mocked by other scientists, some people believed it). It seems that even Tesla, when he was already old and insane, was working on a device that allowed people to "phone" the dead.
Obviously the popularity of paranormal investigation shows on TV prove that interest is alive and well. And, of course, none of us can know for sure in this life!
I have collected stereoviews of ghost images. Most are sad when there's a departed mother or child. I do have one of newlyweds vision of Christmas future that includes children decorating a tree.
Very Interesting, I am wondering if Mary Todd Lincoln specifically requested the pic...I have never read too much on the lady but, I know she suffered from depression, and I am wondering due to the loss of her son and husband if the paranormal was also a part of her interest?
I read that she had her portrait taken by a guy who had a reputation for having these things turn up, and was sought out by people hoping a deceased loved on would turn up. In fact, the photographer was faking them, but Mary Todd apparently fervently believed it was real,
the shadow person"s" looks like two different people to me. The hand and body is of a woman, and I see a women's face just past the crack by the face of a man. The one of Mary Todd has 2 also. At least that is what I see. Great pix.
Want to see the ones on my wall. There is something to that seriously! I painted a spot doing a color check in two rooms and I felt like someone is looking at me. It's because something is.
That isn't the ONLY "spooky" Thing IN the photo...notice the appear- ance, of what "looks" like a wee animal poking itself outward from behind MrDew's coat lapel, midway down, on HIS left side (on our Right, as
continued.. our right, as we are viewing it. It appears as if the creature's snout is pointing downward, with eye, ear seen at top of its head. What might this be? A gopher, a baby bat, a mole, a stuffed animal for this "gag"?? Hmm.....

Portrait photographs and paintings of our loved ones and ancestors.
Before photos we had paintings of family members - most usually these were reserved for the well off. The era of modern photography began with the daguerreotype, in 1839. Since the advent of photogr...
