Carolyn Jackson Some of mine, too. In some ways it's comforting that people keep up an old way of life. In other ways, I wonder if they would have liked to work less just to live on a daily basis.

Yep I would have guessed that. Reminds me of me grand parents at about that time. They also lived in Kentucky.

Part of my Kentucky family moved to Washington around 1900. By the 1970's, my aunt was still using a wood stove to cook . . .

Brenda Bilger My Dad said her cooking on that old wood stove was the best - especially her fried chicken. I was lucky to have some of her cooking. It was good! But probably had a lot to do with the "grease can" she kept on the back of the stove. All of that old grease was used for frying. Lots of flavor - probably not good for us and why my Dad died of cardiac arrest in his early 70s. But we did enjoy life! :)

So true. I think almost all the grandmas had the grease can back in the day. I have such sweet memories of my grand parents.

I was gonna say ‘27. They are certainly set in their ways.
I thought maybe the late 1960s. What's fascinating is that they were born just days apart, and he only lived 7 more months after she died.

Looks like the 1940s to early 50s. You can tell from the type of photography, the type of things in the kitchen & the woman's skirt length.

Okay. I will guess that this photo is not that old, and that these are Grampa and Gramma sort of remembering and reenacting the old days. Do I guess right? Or am I wrong-o?

I guess it depends on your perception of "old." It's not a re-enactment - it's how they lived. You can click on the link to find the date.

It was 1972 or so. I spent a lot of time talking with my Gramma Nellie about the times when she grew up, about the stove, and how they would only get the house properly warmed up (in Idaho when you're poor) on special days. She'd have loved to visit a replica of her old home and shown us how they lived. I think that's what they're doing here, and it's nice.

Ah, I just noticed that it says the date on the page linked in the description lol. Doesn't surprise me a bit. I am from North Dakota and have been searching out and photographing abandoned buildings and towns for over 10 years now. Out in the most rural areas, they really did not get many modern amentities until the late 80s-early 90s.

Brenda Bilger I didn't know my grandmothers or one of my grandfathers but my mom had that grease can on the woodburning stove then the electric stove when she got one. She also cooked most of our food in cast iron skillets.

Rosa Van Horn
I am trying to find family connections in the following families,Newton,Tipton,Gross,Van Horn,& Estes. I have found my Newton family but even though I know I have family connections with the rest, because of not haveing dates have ran into a dead end with the rest. I am 55 and want to know if my cousins or any family are still alive. My full name is Rosa Fae Newton,Van Horn. My Mothers name was Sarah Evelyn Tipton,Newton,Brown and I can give other information if emailed. My Grandmother was a Tipton ,her name was Bell Tipton,Gross. My grandfather was Jessie Tipton and she married Anderson Gross. They lived in many places in Estill county,Ky. and Shoemaker Ridge and Tipton Ridge,Ky.My Great-Grandmothers name was Betsy Ross Tipton also from Ky.Little is known because all records were either lost or destroyed. I do not want anything from any relitive, just to know that someone out there knew or has knowledge of these people, It is very hard telling my children of these people and having pictures of people who the world or resorces say never exhisted when I know these were flesh and blood for I knew them, loved them, and grew up with them.If anyone has any knowledge, please E-mail, and I will E-mail what photoes I have.
