What an excellent class photo! Love the animated face of the teacher. Mr. Richardson's class, grades 10, 11 & 12 taken in Central City Kentucky 1935.
THIS IS AMAZING

Now it is up to humans to recognize it, they have always been equal at birth, man has designated the parameters and more often than not validating it with religion!.

Connie/Kimberly. All of my class photos have kids with happy faces from K-12. (1930s to 1940s). I just think these kids look suppressed/depressed. And considering the time it was taken, I'm not surprised.

Some of this is cultural...education was serious business, looking serious and staying very still were important to some. Add to that the novelty of the class photo. People weren't always being photographed as we are today. In this photo are the class clowns, the popular girls and boys, the star athletes, the best scholars, the kids who loved to sing or dance or read. It is a group of kids like any other group, no more depressed than any others. I like what I see in the teacher's face. He's proud of his kids!

Great pic, if you stop and take a closer look at some of your own class pictures, I think you'll find a lot of similar expressions. Plus think back in 1935 and how our country treated our fellow African American brothers and sisters! And yes, I liked the teachers expression!

There are two main reasons people did not smile in older photographs, and neither has anything to do with attitudes toward lives or living conditions. 1) photos took time and the subjects had to hold their poses, thus a "relaxed" mouth, which can look "serious" to us today. 2) It was not the etiquette back then, when taking portraits. A smile in a portrait was seen as something that would make you look silly or insincere. Mark Twain said "A photograph is a most important document, and there is nothing more damning to go down to posterity than a silly, foolish smile caught and fixed forever."

... so much is based upon "hard Life" ... most are not born into privilege no matter what color
I feel terrible for these children ... that in 1935 ... they were not grateful for just being schooled (as most for whatever color) ... and joyful to be ALIVE! as most

These people, unfortunately, still have a long way to go before they are treated anything like fairly in this country! Oh wait! No one is treated fairly in this country, or anywhere else in this world. No I'm not a pessimist, my deem view of this world is based on facts. I wish it wasn't.

I think this was at the time that the photo took about a full minute or more to "take". Not a snap like today. And if they move at all in that time it turned out blurry. So they were told to not smile so they could hold the position still for the whole time.
