My grandma had a beautiful dress very similar to that for her wedding in June 1945. I asked her about it and she swore up and down that it wasn't beautiful because it had to be made out of "curtain material" because of war shortages. I don't know what she meant and the dress is long gone. It was gorgeous in the pictures.

I am assuming you do know what she meant by now but just in case.... there was a shortage of dress material during the war as everything was going towards uniform material so they made do with what they had - hence the curtain material was used

I know what she meant but not the specific material or what it looked like, you couldn't tell from the photos.

Hope they had wonderful lives together.
As their son, I can assure you they had a wonderful and happy life together. Unfortunately, Albert died young at age 50, but Grace just recently passed away at age 95.

Wonder how old the parents are there?
Dominic Arena was 52 and Josephine (Silipigni) Arena was 49 in this picture - both were Sicilian immigrants that arrived here in 1905 and 1902 respectively.

Wedding gowns from the 40's were gorgeous. Sometimes friends borrowed them, if they couldn't afford their own and because things were rationed. I think I saw my mother's gown in pictures from at least three other weddings. My parents were married in June of 1946.
