    CENSUS 30 March 1851, CENSUS, ENGLAND Shepreth, Hertfordshire, England Young Maling is a 63-year-old labourer, his wife Susan is 57. Two of their unmarried children slept at home on census night: Kezia, 26; and John, 22, farm labourer. Lodging with the family is 10-year-old scholar, William Maling. Except for Susan - born Foxton - they were all born in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire.

They challenged each other to write the best horror story they could. Mary (Godwin) Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" - which came to her in a dream. Polidori wrote the short story The Vampyre.

In 1827, he was 39 years old when Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.
