  • Obituary

The following appeared in the Daily News in New York on Saturday February 20th 1999: William Stiller, father of comic actor Jerry Stiller and grandfather of actors Ben and Amy Stiller, died Thursday of natural causes at a nursing home in Spring Valley, Rockland County. He was 102. The elder Stiller, a former city bus driver, remained "a fun-loving guy" who until recently "would entertain at senior citizen homes with his third wife Marsha," Jerry Still said. Jerry, perhaps best known for his role as George Costanza's father in "Seinfeld," said his piano and sax-playing dad inspired but didn't encourage him to pursue a screen career. Jerry's son Ben starred in the movie "There's Something About Mary," and his daughter Amy has appeared with Jerry in his new TV show, "The King of Queens." Other survivors include William Stiller's wife, a sister, a brother and four other grandchildren. Burial will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, L.I.

In 1896, in the year that William Stiller was born, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.
Did you know?
In 1944, at the age of 48 years old, William was alive when on June 22nd, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, called the G.I. Bill, was signed into law, pushed through by the veteran's organizations. Benefits provided for veterans to return to school (high school, vocational school, or college), obtain low interest home mortgages and low interest business loans, and (if needed) one year of unemployment insurance. Since most returning vets immediately found work, less than 20% of the unemployment benefits were distributed.
