William Martin Ord 1891 - 1971

William Martin Ord of Ararat, Ararat Rural City County, VIC Australia was born in 1891 in Warrak to Henrietta Susan Brown Ord and Henry Ord. He had siblings George Henry Ord, Lillian Caroline Ord, Percival Leslie Ord, Henrietta Isabel Ord, and Mildred Olive Ord. He married Rheita Clarice (Start) Ord in 1914, and had children Frank William Henry Ord and Bessie Marion Ord. William Ord died at age 79 years old on May 5, 1971 in Ararat.

In 1891, in the year that William Martin Ord was born, James Naismith, at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA, invented the game of basketball. Originally using two peach baskets and a soccer ball, he created the game to keep his students active during the long, harsh New England winters.

In 1907, by the time he was 16 years old, the showman Florenz Ziegfeld introduced his Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. The top entertainers of the time played in the Follies but the stars were the Ziegfeld girls - beautiful chorus girls in elaborate costumes. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.
