William Leslie Wallis of Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born on June 11, 1889 in Malmsbury to Mary Emma (Stephenson) Wallis and John Flew Wallace. He had siblings Ethel Maud (Wallis) Nixon, Laura Mary Wallis, Henry John Wallis, and Raymond Frederick Wallis. He married Vera Jane Newman in 1916, and had children Frances Philemina Wallace, George Patrick Wallace, and Lloyd Martin Wallace. William Wallis died at age 83 years old on July 3, 1972 in Bendigo.

In 1889, in the year that William Leslie Wallis was born, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.
