William Joy was born in 1861 to Charles Mansfield Clark Joy and Rachel Joy, and had a sister Marion May (Joy) Connolly. He married Johanna (McKenna) Joy, and had children Daphne Johanna Joy, Clark Mansfield "Mance" Joy, and Marjorie (Joy) Potter. William Joy died at age 60 years old on November 23, 1922 in Malvern East, Stonnington City County, VIC Australia.

In 1861, in the year that William Joy was born, on March 4th, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States. Winning by a plurality of the popular vote, 39.8% - there were many candidates, Douglas was the strongest - he decisively won the electoral college with 180 votes. He was the first President to emerge from the newly created Republican Party.

In 1871, by the time he was just 10 years old, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.
