William Edward Lavender of Melbourne Australia was born in 1893 in Melbourne to Annie Elizabeth (Howes) Lavender and Elijah Lavender. He had siblings Ruby Gladys Lavender, Herbert George Lavender, Jack Joseph Lavender, Alfred Bert Lavender, James Lavender, Leonard Lavender, Elijah Lavender, and Harold Lavender. William Lavender married Ivy Bertha Coote in 1928, and died at age 76 years old in 1969 in Melbourne.

In 1893, in the year that William Edward Lavender was born, a songbook, called Song Stories for the Kindergarten, was published by sisters Patty and Mildred Hill. One of the songs included in the book was "Good Morning to All" - later the lyrics were changed and it became "Happy Birthday to You".

In 1915, William was 22 years old when the Superior Court in Fulton County Georgia accepted the charter for the establishment of the new Ku Klux Klan, succeeding the Klan that flourished in the South in the late 1800's. This iteration of the Klan adopted white clothing and used many of the code words from the first Klan, adding cross burnings and mass marches in an attempt to intimidate others.
