Bill's family was of German (from Bavaria) heritage. He lived all of his life in PA; was born in the city of York and passed into eternity at his home in Dover, York County, PA. Bill and his wife, Gloria (nee Wilt), settled in Dover shortly after they wed in June of 1945 and lived in the same home their entire married life of 51 years together. They raised their 4 children in that home--Sharon, Stephen, Shirley and Susan. They saw their children leave home, marry and start their own families. Shirley pre deceased both her parents, passing from Hodgkins lymphoma in May of 1991 right after her 36th birthday. Bill was in the military in WW II--in the Army Air Corps--stationed overseas in Italy (near Naples) and he loaded thousands of bombs in the B-25 that decimated the German Luftwaffe and ushered in liberation from the tyranny of the Nazis and Fascist forces in Italy. After returning home from military duty, Bill reignited his relationship with his betrothed, Gloria Wilt, and they wed shortly after his return from the war--in June of 1945. He always worked in the textile manufacturing industry--first as a weaver for many years with Tioga Weaving Mills--later on as a weaver and then a loom fixer with Keystone Textiles--both companies were located in the city of York, PA. Although Bill stayed close to his roots--his imagination took him around the world and beyond. He was an avid reader--especially of magazines and books involving the U. S. military expeditions (Air Corps in particular) in both WWI and WWII. He was also a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and read the Bible from "cover to cover" many times. He had various expository versions (especially the Scofield Reference Bible as his favorite version) and loved to discuss Christian precepts with anyone who would entertain his sharing his strong defense of Christian doctrine. Bill also thoroughly enjoyed building his own design of radio-controlled airplanes--he was most proud of his WWI and WWII models that he designed himself and built with great care and precision. He'd crash land them occasionally--but they were built so solidly, he could almost always repair the damage and "take flight" once more at the Dover RC Club airfield. He mentored quite a few RC Club members in the finer details of building RC airplanes and certainly was sorely missed at the RC Club after his death. Bill's memory will always be cherished by his family; he was a good man, devoted husband, father and grandfather and solid citizen who loved God, family and country...in that order! R.I.P. William Cleveland Zartman--my Dad and a child of the Most High Creator God.

Bill the musician
My fondest memories were of sitting in the living room at night as a little girl of 3 years old listening to my Dad play country music tunes on his acoustic guitar. Dad at one time in his teen years had been part of a "country music band" of neighborhood guys and gals from York, PA. They even played on a local radio talent scout show and I believe even won first prize on one of their performances. I would sing along when I knew the words, but usually was just happy to be with my Dad listening to him "sing and strum".

I look forward to joining him in God's bright kingdom playing piano for him while he strums some favorite tunes for Jesus and the heavenly "chorale".

Love you Dad - thank you for giving us a moral compass and showing us what hard work and dedication to a cause is all about.
