WALTRAUD BLOMSTEDT / Wife of ex-director of S.F. Symphony by Joshua Kosman, Chronicle Music Critic Feb. 12, 2003 Waltraud Blomstedt, the wife of former San Francisco Symphony music director Herbert Blomstedt, died Saturday at her home in Lucerne, Switzerland, after a long illness. She was 74. Although Mrs. Blomstedt was a gifted linguist with a degree in musicology who occasionally taught German and French, her main occupation was as a mother, homemaker and helpmeet to her husband, who retains the position of conductor laureate. "I am not that career-minded," she once said. "I think many women would envy me. With my husband away so much, I have had to make my own life. I can do what I want." Like her husband, Mrs. Blomstedt was also a devout Seventh-Day Adventist and was active in the church, both in the Bay Area and abroad. Because of their shared faith, she said, she never worried about other women when her husband was away. Mrs. Blomstedt was born in Hamburg to Swedish parents and moved to Sweden during World War II, where she met her future husband. She is survived by four daughters, Elisabet Hafstad of Oslo, Norway, and Dr. Cecila Blomstedt, Dr. Maria Astrom and Kristina Blomstedt, all of Orebro, Sweden; a sister, Dr. Ursula Fiedler of Lubeck-Travemunde, Germany; and six grandchildren.

In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. In 1934, by the time she was only 6 years old, on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
