Walter Membrey 1870 - 1937

Walter Membrey of Northcote, City of Darebin County, VIC Australia was born in 1870 in Buninyong to Benjamin John Membrey and Mary Ann (Hadley) Membrey. He had siblings Edward Membrey, Caroline Mary Membrey, Mary Anne (Membrey) Crowe, William Hadley Membry, Henry Alfred Membrey, and James George Membrey. He married Margaret Emily Mathie in 1898, and had children James Edward Membrey, Arthur Howard Membrey, and Myrtle Isabel Membrey. Walter Membrey died at age 66 years old on July 23, 1937 in Northcote.

In 1870, in the year that Walter Membrey was born, on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.

In 1890, when he was 20 years old, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.
