Walter John Matthau was born on October 1, 1920 in Lower East Side, New York County, New York United States to Milton Melas Matthow and Rose Marie Matthow, and had a brother Henry John Matthow. He married Grace Geraldine Johnson in 1948 in New York City, New York County and they later divorced in 1958 in New York City. They had children David Martin Matthau and Jenny Wendy Matthau. He also married Carol Grace Matthau on August 21, 1959 in New York City, New York County, and they were married until Walter's death on July 1, 2000 at Providence St. John's Health Center 2121 Santa Monica Blvd., in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. They had a child Charles Marcus Matthau.
