Walter Ernest Barton was born in 1884 in Stratford, Wellington Shire County, VIC Australia to Augustine "Gustinia" Matilda (Orchard) Barton and William Barton, and had siblings David John Barton, Abbey Eliza Barton, Caroline Julia (Barton) Murdoch, and William Daniel Barton. Walter Barton died at age 30 years old on August 7, 1915 at Walkers Ridge, Gallipoli Peninsula in Gelibolu County, Çanakkale Turkey.

In 1884, in the year that Walter Ernest Barton was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. On July 1st, President Cleveland was operated on for a non-cancerous tumor in his mouth. He chose to have the operation secretly because he didn't want to worsen the financial depression that was occurring at the time.
