Vincent Serio's History: 1896 - 1971

  • Introduction

The Serios lived up the street from us on James River Drive, five blocks north of Hilton Village in Newport News. My first conscious recollection of them was just after I had abandoned my trike. It was a period when TV and air condition was over the horizon, transistors were a part of our lexicon and screen porches were being walled up. Families knew everyone in the area and neighbors had no problem in admonition us kids’ misbehavior. Mr. Serio owned a boat factory in Hampton. He was the designer and creator of the Hampton 1 sailboat, perhaps one of the most beautiful day sailers ever. His factory built them and they were planked with clear mahogany. Behind his home was a modest workshop. His son, who I always called VJ, was a gifted model airplane maker. I got older and during college summers, I built a 14 Duster catboat. When time came to rigging it, I went to Mr. Serio’s boat works and he generously gave me 2 chain plates. By then, VJ was running a remote control operation on Warwick Blvd., just south of Hilton Village. Sad to say, after college and as I pursued a career, I gradually lost touch of our neighbors. For me, however, I shall always remember them and never take for granted how fortunate I was to be amongst them. The Serios were such good people. Stuart Forbes, age 82, Virginia Beach, VA
