    Velma O. Crumby, 96, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away June 16, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Maple Hill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Velma was born in Lake City, AR, and had lived in the K.C. area since 1951. She worked as a homemaker and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Preceding her in death were her husband, Nathan Crumby, Sr., 2 sons, Curtis and Edward Crumby; a daughter, Faye Parker; 2 brothers, Perry and W.F. Baker and 3 sisters, Vival Bates, Ruby Snow and Johnnie Wallace. Survivors include 6 sons, Lloyd, Nathan, Jr., T.J., Jerry, Terry and Gary Crumby; 5 daughters, Gloria Higginbotham, Mary Clark, Helen Barnes, Shirley Collins, Lisa Crumby; 2 brothers, Billy and Bobby Baker; 3 sisters, Lena Tidwell, Doris Odam, Margarete Hogen and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
