    Velma O. Crumby, 96, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away June 16, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Maple Hill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Velma was born in Lake City, AR, and had lived in the K.C. area since 1951. She worked as a homemaker and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Preceding her in death were her husband, Nathan Crumby, Sr., 2 sons, Curtis and Edward Crumby; a daughter, Faye Parker; 2 brothers, Perry and W.F. Baker and 3 sisters, Vival Bates, Ruby Snow and Johnnie Wallace. Survivors include 6 sons, Lloyd, Nathan, Jr., T.J., Jerry, Terry and Gary Crumby; 5 daughters, Gloria Higginbotham, Mary Clark, Helen Barnes, Shirley Collins, Lisa Crumby; 2 brothers, Billy and Bobby Baker; 3 sisters, Lena Tidwell, Doris Odam, Margarete Hogen and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In 1928, at the age of only 15 years old, Velma was alive when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
