    Thyrza Hancock's father was Edward Smith (1805 - 1864), born in Staffordshire, and her mother was Catherine Marsh (1810 - 1893), also born in Staffordshire. Her biological father was John Hancock (1806 - 1838). She had sibling Edward and half-siblings Joseph and John. Thyrza married William Harrington (1838 - 1895) on June 25, 1859 in Wolstanton, England, and they had children James William, Annie M., and Edward. When Thyrza was 44, she and husband William were living with her mother, Catherine, 71, in Cheshire England. Also in the household were their children Ann, 14, and Edward, 7.

In 1836, in the year that Thyrza Hancock was born, on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo. The battle lasted until March 6th - all of the settler army was killed. Historians estimate that 400–600 in the Mexican Army were killed.

In 1846, Thyrza was only 10 years old when on June 15th, the Oregon Treaty - between Great Britain and the US - was signed. The Treaty agreed that the 49th parallel would be the border between the United States and Canada. Since the actual border wasn't clear in the Treaty, dispute about what was Canada and what was the US continued for a decade.
