In 1812, in the year that Thomas Pitre was born, on June 1st, U.S. President James Madison asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on the United Kingdom. Thus began the War of 1812. Great Britain tried to avert the war as they saw it as a way for the U.S. to annex Canada - and they were simultaneously involved in a war with France.

In 1848, he was 36 years old when on November 1st, the first medical school for women - but founded by a man - opened in Boston. Called the Boston Female Medical College, and later merging with the Boston University School of Medicine, women could officially attend medical classes and be trained as physicians.
