Thomas Haywood Stark was born on August 3, 1955 in Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina United States to Rufus Haywood Stark II and Betty Louise Stark, and had siblings Walter Goodwin Stark, Paul Cushman Stark, and Sarah Anne Reed. He married Nancy Ann Powell in 1983 in Greenville, Pitt County and they later divorced in 2001 in Greenville. They had children Michael Thomas Stark and Jonathan Gibson Stark. He married Edwina Jackson Stark in 2003 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, and they were married until Thomas' death on December 17, 2018 in Chapel Hill.

In 1955, in the year that Thomas Haywood Stark was born, on September 30th, movie star James Dean, 24, died in a car accident. He was headed in his new Porsche 550 to a race in Salinas California when, traveling at 85 mph, he collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor, also speeding, driven by a 23 year old college student. Dean died, his passenger and the other driver survived.
