  • Personal Life & Family

She was a die hard Republican and loved law enforcement and military folks.Always thanking them for their service ,also an active member of crime stoppers. When her kids were young in Nevada she loved having all the neighborhood kids come over and made homemade cookies, fudge, cotton candy among other yumyums. Forever the performer, she involved her kids in dance, piano lessons and of course, travelling from church to church and other places having her kids sing in front of many crowds. She made matching outfits for her kids. She was widowed in 1965 or 66.She was married to a wonderful man named Rudolph Pekkala, who unfortunately, passed away at the age of 33 in a parking lot of a heart attack. She always said that he was the love of her life and a wonderful man. A couple years later she met a man named Harold gridley and married him and had another child. And this child was her problem child and it was me! When she passed away she had her two daughters, her granddaughter and a few other people there to send her off to her final resting place, where she is getting some good peaceful rest before she rises again and meets the Lord that she loved so much. The day of her death, I believe, was one of her most peaceful days that she had ever experienced. I held her hand until I felt her heart stop beating and she took her last breath. I can feel the peace the calmness of her soul and the peace that he had finally obtained and I rejoiced for her. It was very difficult for me to think about crying out of sadness when I was so happy for her after watching her suffer for so many years.

In 1938, in the year that Sylvia Lynn Pekkala was born, on October 30th, a Sunday, The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast Orson Welles' special Halloween show The War of the World's. A clever take on H.G. Wells' novel, the show began with simulated "breaking news" of an invasion by Martians. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC. Although the current story is that many were fooled and panicked, in reality very few people were fooled. But the show made Orson Welles' career.
Did you know?
