    STEVE SCHMIDLY Obituary STEVE SCHMIDLY ASHEBORO Stephen Scott Schmidly, age 64, of Asheboro died Friday, February 7, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. Mr. Schmidly was born July 29, 1949 the son of Henry "Chick" and Norvell Akin Schmidly. Steve grew up in Levelland, TX and received degrees in music and political science from Texas Tech University. He was the youngest high-school band director in the state of Texas, while a student at TTU, serving Whiteface High School, and schools in Wellington and Floydada, TX. He then received his law degree from Wake Forest School of Law and spent the rest of his life in North Carolina, in Asheboro since 1987. Steve's passion was helping young people. He coached the Mock Trial team at Asheboro High School for many years and they finished runner up in the year 2000 National Competition. He coached baseball in Randleman for years for all ages, most recently at Randleman Middle School going on to win 3 county championships in 5 years. He served as the Randolph County Board of Elections Chairman and was the Chairman of the Randolph Democratic Party for years. Other than his family, sport's broadcasting was the love of his life. He did the color commentary on WKXR for Asheboro High School baseball games and the Courier-Tribune Invitational basketball tournament. Steve practiced law in Asheboro for many years helping many people with various issues. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife: Susan Hockett Schmidly; son and his wife: Scott and Tamara Schmidly of Atlanta, GA; daughter and her husband: Brooke Schmidly and Derrick Caudill of Asheboro, NC; daughter and her husband: Paige and Jeremy (Byrd) Piper of Randleman, NC; stepson and his wife: Justin and Abbey Windsor of Pleasant Garden, NC; stepdaughter: Staci Isaacs of Asheboro, NC; stepson: Bryson Windsor of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren: Cole Piper, Hannah and Jake Schmidly, Ben Windsor, Sierra Caudill, Will Isaacs, Sam Huffar and Austin Piper; one brother and his wife, Dave and Janet Schmidly of Placitas, TX; niece and her husband: Katherine Schmidly Ong and Brian and nephew and his wife: Brian James Schmidly and Carla. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 4:00-6:30 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The Memorial Service will be Monday, February 10, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro with The Rev. John N. Ogburn, Deacon officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Kids of Childhood Cancer P. O. Box 195 Kernersville, NC 27285-0195; or to Hospice Of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
