Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. In 1915, at the age of only 11 years old, Stefano was alive when The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".
