He had siblings Olive Dorothy Elizabeth Cunningham, Henry Donald Cunningham, Emma Laura Rosina Cunningham, Ruby Sarah Jane Cunningham, Norman Frederick Cunningham, Robert William Henry Cunninghame, and Leslie George Maynard Cunningham. Stanley Cunningham married Henrietta Mcvey in 1936, and died at age 72 years old in 1978 in Parkville.

In 1906, in the year that Stanley John Charles Cunningham was born, author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

In 1915, Stanley was just 9 years old when in April, the Ottoman Empire rounded up, arrested, and deported 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Turkey. As their actions continued through the next several years, an estimated 600,000 to 1 million Armenians were killed by Turkish soldiers.
