  • Introduction

    Simmy Jean Turner was my aunt and she was not born into the Reynolds family but married into it. After her divorce from my uncle, she never remarried. I have lots of memories of her but what I want to always remember is how much she loved her family and how hard she fought the cancer that eventually took her life. I think besides the birth of her son, and taking care of my grandmother until my grandmother's death, the biggest and most selfless thing she did was to have her body donated to the University of Alabama for cancer research. I hope one day her death will have helped save countless others. I miss her so much and any class I might have, I got from her.

In 1933, in the year that Simmy J Reynolds was born, on March 4th, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the United States. He was elected four times (equaled by no other President) and guided the United States through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War 2. His wife was his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt (Teddy Roosevelt's niece) who President Truman called "First Lady of the World". Some of the major programs that survive from his presidency are the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wagner Act (The National Labor Relations Act of 1935) , the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Social Security.

In 1948, by the time she was only 15 years old, on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
