In 1825, in the year that Silas Wagner was born, on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.

In 1835, he was just 10 years old when on June 2nd, P. T. Barnum and his "circus" began their first tour of the U.S. He had paid $1,000 for an elderly slave named Joice Heth, who he claimed was 161 years old and a former nurse for George Washington. Touring the northeast of the U.S., he made more than $1,000 per week. Joice died the next year - at about 80 years old.
