In 1815, in the year that Silas Hilman Fuller was born, on June 18th, the Battle of Waterloo was fought. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher decisively defeated Napoleon's troops. The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of the French. Napoleon would die in exile six years later.

In 1831, at the age of 16 years old, Silas was alive when on November 7th, slave trading was forbidden in Brazil. Purchasing slaves had begun under Portuguese rule in the mid-16th century - slaves were used on sugarcane plantations. It wasn't until 1888, however, that slavery was totally abolished.
