    Shazanta "Shane" Brashear was born on May 17th, 1955 in St. Albans, New York, to Carl Maxie Brashear (1931 - 2008) and Junetta Wilcoxson (1933 - 2015). Both of his parents were born in Kentucky. Shazanta had three brothers, Phillip, DaWayne, and Patrick. NOTE: Military records say that his date of birth was May 17th, 1955. His headstone agrees with that date. Social security records indicate that Shane was born on April 17th, 1955. A veteran, Shazanta served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Service ran in Shazanta's family as his father, Carl Maxie Brshear, was the first Black United States Navy deep sea diver. Carl endured a number of death threats from white shipmates. While on the job and while recovering from a bomb blast, Carl was left an amputee. After the incident, Carl was quoted as saying "It's not a sin to be knocked down, it's a sin to stay down." He was the first amputee to be restored to full activity as a diver. A movie was later made about his life. See Shazanta Brasher's father - Carl Maxie Brashear's story for more details. Shazanta Brashear, age 25, married Phyllis Marie Darden, age 22, on December 12th, 1980 in Portsmouth, Virginia. They had a son, Randy. Sadly, Shazanta died of a heart attack in Fishersville, Virginia at the relatively young age of 41, on November 13th, 1996. He is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia.     Shazanta ''Shane'' Brashear, 41, of the 600 block of Dunedin Road, Hodges Manor Apartments, died Nov. 13, 1996, in Augusta County Medical Center, Fisherville, Va. A former part-time newspaper carrier for The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, Mr. Brashear was a native of Springfield Gardens, Long Island, N.Y. He attended area Catholic churches. He was also an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Darden Brashear; son Randy Brashear of Portsmouth; mother Junetta W. Brashear of Portsmouth; father Carl Brashear of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Phillip Brashear of Richmond, Dwayne Brashear of Newark, N.J., and Patrick Brashear of Jarratt, Va.; and a host of relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in New Testament Church, Portsmouth, by Elder Charles H. Bowens Jr. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, with military honors. Shazanta Brasher's father - Carl Maxie Brashear's story
After enduring death threats from white shipmates and efforts by Navy officers to sabotage his final exam in diving school, Carl Maxie Brashear emerged as the Navy's first black deep sea diver.

Ha had no intention of giving that up in 1966, after injuries suffered while recovering a bomb left him an amputee.

In the months after the accident, Master Chief Petty Office Bashear put himself through grueling physical training.

"It's not a sin to be knocked down," he told the Salt Lake Tribune in 2002. "It's a sin to stay down."

Master Chief Petty Officer Brashear went on to become the first black master diver in the US Navy, and the first amputee to be restored to full active duty as a diver. His story was told in the 2000 film "Men of Honor". He died of respiratory and heart failure Tuesday at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth VA, He was 75.

His son Phillip, a helicopter pilot, was brought back from Iraq last week because of his father's illness. In addition to Phillip, Master Chief Pettty Officer Brashear is survived by sons DaWayne Brashear and Patrick Brashear, and by his first wife Junetta Brashear. The couple divorced but remained friends. Another son, Shazanta Brashear, died in 1996.
