Sarah Rachel Sarah (Freedman) Goldenberg of Geelong Australia was born in 1876 in Geelong, VIC. She was married to Isaac Goldenberg, and had a child Freda Gertrude Sara Goldenberg. Sarah Rachel Goldenberg died at age 63 years old on November 5, 1940 in Melbourne, and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery College Crescent - Jewish Section, in Parkville.

  • Introduction

    Rachel was born Sarah Rachel to Samuel and Miriam (Maria, maiden name Stone) Freedman in 1876. She was the fourth of 10 children. Rachel married Isaac Goldenberg on 17th August, 1904 at the Geelong Synagogue. It was the first wedding in 15 years to be celebrated at the Geelong Synagogue. Rachel and Isaac had one child, a daughter Freda. Freda never married and she enlisted as a Telegraphist from 19/4/1943 - 10/12/1945 with the Royal Australian Navy during WW 11. In August 1932 the famous opera singer, Cesarina Valobra visited "Beachmount", 20 Eastern Beach, Geelong where Rachel and Isaac lived and entertained guests with her singing. There are many articles regarding double knitting of scarves, balaclavas, socks etc. for the war effort and her Red Cross volunteering. Rachel taught dressmaking at the Gordon Institute of Techology in Geelong. Rachel died in 1940 and she is buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong.

In 1876, in the year that Sarah Rachel Freedman Goldenberg was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

In 1884, at the age of merely 8 years old, Sarah Rachel was alive when on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
