Sarah Jane Bowen was born in 1866 to Andrew Murray.. and Sarah Ann Murray ( Pitkin, and had siblings Walter Murray, Ernest Murray, Isabel Selke ( Murray, Maude Billington, Nita Murray, George Murray, Peter Murray, and Margaret Elizabeth Bowen. She married Walter Bowen, and had children Rita Elsie Bowen and Walter "Eric" Bowen. Sarah Bowen died at age 39 years old in 1905.

In 1866, in the year that Sarah Jane Bowen was born, on April 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the ASPCA - was created. New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

In 1879, at the age of only 13 years old, Sarah was alive when on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
