This is my grandfather about the time he met my grandmother. He left Iowa with brother Nathan & cousin John. John stayed in Utah, Nathan in Arizona, and Samuel went to California (1850's). Samuel mined with William Barnes in Grass Valley, then bought a farm in Thermolands near Sheridan. He was a wheat farmer & hauled wheat to the mill in Grass Valley for Barnes Drayage, returning with sacks of flour.

A photo of Samuel J. Lewis at DIckman's photo gallery. My grandfather had a 240 acre wheat farm. He married one of his neighbors (Thomas Barker) sisters. As a young man he drove his doctor father around in a carriage and learned about drugs. In frontier California, he was the closest thing to a doctor the settlers had. Mother said he cured Uncle Emmit Barkers cataracts with a formula brewed in eggshells on the stove.

This photo of Samuel Jackson Lewis is from the Barker album of Aunt Mary Barker French. My grandfather belonged to the Odd Fellows & served as a school trustee. He helped build the Valley View School where his children attended. When his brother Nathaniel's wife died, the kids were taken in by my grandparents. He went down to the train station to meet them. They came alone all the way from Las Vegas. He asked some Indian children if they had seen the Lewis kids and they said they were Nathan's kids. After grade school, they went back to live with Uncle Nathaniel.
