    Samuel Solomon Clevenson was born on August 1, 1917 in Laconia, New Hampshire to parents Harry and Sadie Clevenson. He had an older sister Dora, and younger siblings Henry, Diana, Sherman, and Helene Clevenson. He enlisted on December 17, 1941 in Hartford Connecticut and served in the US Air Force. After returning from the war, Sam worked at newspapers including the "Syracuse Herald-Journal" and the "Boston Traveler". In 1962, Sam and his family moved to Schenectady as he worked for "The Union-Star". This is where he became actively involved in the local Jewish community and a few years later on September 23, 1965, "The Jewish World" debuted. Samuel Clevenson was the founder and publisher of "The Jewish World" newspaper. He married Pearl Groopman in 1952 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.

    SCHENECTADY -- Sam S. Clevenson, founder and publisher of The Jewish World, died on Friday, July 25, 2008 at his residence. He began his newspaper career in 1931, covering sports as a high school freshman in Laconia, N.H. Reporting and editing jobs throughout New England followed before he joined the Air Force in 1941. Following the war, he worked at papers including the Syracuse Herald-Journal and the Boston Traveler. The Union-Star brought Mr. Clevenson, his wife, Pearl, and their children to Schenectady in 1962, where he became actively involved in the local Jewish community. On September 23, 1965, The Jewish World debuted. A former board member of Congregation Agudat Achim, Mr. Clevenson was secretary of the Jewish Community Council before it combined with Albany to form the United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York. He has received the Israel Bonds Award and the Federation's top award for community service. He is survived by his wife, Pearl; son, daughter; brother, Sherman Clevenson of Newport News, Va. (2015), and sister, Diane Stone of Worcester, Mass (2017). Services at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street, Schenectady at a day and time to be announced. Interment will be in the Agudat Achim Cemetery in Rotterdam, N.Y. Memorial contributions in memory of Sam may be made to the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, 180 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY 12203 or any other Jewish charity.
