Sam Nanini was a gentleman of the old school. Sam was gracious and never ignored anyone around him. He always took time to stop and talk with me even though I was only twelve years old when we first met in 1959 or 1960. Sam was a force who never seemed harried or stressed by anything but always in firm control of what went on around him. I think he was very proud of what he had accomplished in life and secure in the knowledge that he had left a lasting mark as his legacy. He had great foresight in his investments of land. I remember him describing to me how he personally chose the statuary and the fountain for the Casas Adobes Shopping Center and had them made in Italy. Another time I remember standing with him and my family as he looked out at the area that was soon to be the Tucson National Golf Course and he described how he had seen the potential in the ranch land and cotton farm it had been. He was always happy to be close to his wife Giaconda and both of his children and he expressed that feeling openly. Ours was the second family to join the Tucson National Golf Club to support Sam in his new endeavor. In those early days of the club's existence, Jack Nicklaus was relatively new to the golf circuit and was our traveling golf pro and I remember meeting Sean Connery there when I was about 14.
